| As with most countries, Canada offers a great variety of "home" options.
Below are some of the living accommodations for you to consider:
- A room for rent. Some owners of houses or apartments may let separate rooms in those dwellings. Still, the bathroom(s) and the kitchen are shared by all tenants.
- A studio. These apartments are small-sized and were primarily designed for only one person. Most studios consist of a single large room – that includes a kitchen and a bedroom – and a separate bathroom.
- An apartment. Larger apartments are also available. These range in size from 1 to 3 bedrooms. They also consist of separate kitchens, bathrooms and living rooms.
- A duplex. A duplex is a single home divided into two separate living areas. Each area is fully separate from the other, but residents may have a shared yard or driveway.
- A townhome. Townhomes are small houses which are built in rows, thus forming a chain. Most of the homes in the chain look similar.
- A house. Homes of all shapes and sizes are available throughout Canada. You can also choose to have a home built specifically to your specifications on an available lot.
- A condominium. Condos are basically apartments or townhomes that are owned, not rented. Owners are responsible for all of the internal upkeep on the property and must pay property taxes. They also pay a condo association fee that covers the costs of outdoor maintenance.
Besides these options, there is another important choice you need to make: furnished or unfurnished.
In Canada, you can find furnished living accommodations. This means that all of the necessary furnishings are provided, such as beds and chairs. Furnished accommodations may be a good option when you are first moving to Canada, particularly if you are immigrating from a distance, as transportation costs can be significant.
However, most people choose to live in an unfurnished "home" to be able to decorate the way they want. Some unfurnished homes and apartments will still include fridges and stoves in the kitchen.
Yet, housing costs vary considerably, even within the same province. You can save cash on your housing, if you do some research and consider areas outside of major cities. |
