Infertility (differently called sterility) is the inability to get pregnant after, at least, one year of trying. A female is not always to be blamed. In 30% of cases infertility is because of the woman. In another 30% of cases, infertility is due to the man. The remaining cases are caused by a combination of male and female factors or by unknown factors. Problems with ovulation account for most cases of sterility in females. Without ovulation, there are no eggs to be fertilized. Irregular or absent menstrual periods can signal that a female is not ovulating normally. Less common causes of conception problems in females are blocked uterine tubes because of pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis, or operation for an ectopic pregnancy, physical problems with the uterus, uterine fibroids. Many things can adversely impact upon the female inability to have a baby. They include age, strain, poor diet, athletic training, being obese or underweight, heavy smoking, substance abuse, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), well-being problems that affect the hormonal balance. These days more females conceive their first baby when they are in their 30s or 40s. Actually, around 20% of women in the United States of America nowadays have their first child after the age of 35. Thus, age is a very common cause of reproduction problems. About 30% of couples where the woman is over 35 have conception problems. In men, hormonal imbalances, illnesses, reproductive anatomy injury and obstruction, as well as sexual dysfunction can temporarily or permanently badly affect reproduction. The longer some disorders are untreated, the fewer chances of recovery are. Men who smoke are believed to have a 13-17% lower sperm count than non-smokers. High alcohol intake can considerably reduce the sperm count. Tight fitting clothes and prolonged periods of sitting can cause a drop in sperm count through undue heating of the testes. Marijuana, cocaine and anabolic steroids all reduce the sperm count and adversely impact on motility. Both males and females need specialist medical aid if pregnancy does not happen naturally.
